# Scratchpad — Workflow Designer Grouped Palette, Inline Action Inputs, and Transform Actions

## What This Is
Keep a lightweight, continuously-updated log of discoveries and decisions made while implementing this plan.
Prefer short bullets. Append new entries as you learn things, and also update earlier notes when a decision changes.
## Decisions
- (2026-03-13) Keep runtime execution on `action.call` in v1. The grouped palette and grouped-step model are designer abstractions, not a runtime contract rewrite.
- (2026-03-13) Replace the per-action palette with a hybrid grouped palette: built-in domain-object tiles plus app/plugin tiles.
- (2026-03-13) Replace the action input mapping dialog with an inline field-based editor in the right-side properties panel.
- (2026-03-13) Keep `config.inputMapping` as the persisted action-input model in v1.

- (2026-03-13) Land transform actions incrementally through the runtime action registry first, starting with the text-shaping slice. That unlocks grouped-catalog search and downstream schema wiring without coupling the first runtime batch to the upcoming inline-editor refactor.
- (2026-03-13) Cover the remaining grouped-palette drag/search state through a small palette-presentational component plus jsdom coverage instead of waiting on the DB-backed Playwright harness. This keeps the shipped behavior unchanged while giving the drag-state UI a deterministic test seam.
- (2026-03-13) Treat catch-block error references as contextual sources, not global ones. Payload, step outputs, metadata, and forEach values stay broadly available, but `error.*` should only appear when the current step is actually inside a catch branch.
## Discoveries / Constraints
- (2026-03-13) The current workflow designer already uses `action.call` as the execution primitive and injects `actionId`/`version` when action-specific palette items are dragged onto the canvas.
- (2026-03-13) The current palette is constructed directly from the action registry plus designer-side curation in `ee/server/src/components/workflow-designer/WorkflowDesigner.tsx`.
- (2026-03-13) The current action-input UX already derives field lists from action schemas, but hides authoring behind an `Input Mapping` dialog.
- (2026-03-14) EE Vitest still cannot resolve `@alga-psa/tenancy/actions` when importing the full `InputMappingEditor` module directly, so row-level inline-field coverage is currently more stable through extracted presentational seams than through the full secrets-backed editor in this harness.
- (2026-03-13) The current runtime `InputMapping` contract supports expressions, secrets, and literal values and resolves them in `shared/workflow/runtime/utils/mappingResolver.ts`.
- (2026-03-13) The current designer already maintains schema-driven data context for payload, prior step outputs, metadata, error context, and forEach context.
- (2026-03-13) The current designer already has mapping/type-compatibility UI primitives and expression-editor autocomplete infrastructure that should be reused where possible.
- (2026-03-13) Action schema export currently includes generic JSON Schema information, but does not yet carry workflow-specific picker metadata.
- (2026-03-13) Existing reusable UI components already exist for `BoardPicker`, `ClientPicker`, `ContactPicker`, `SearchableSelect`, `UserPicker`, and related selector patterns.
- (2026-03-13) The current expression runtime is already a constrained JSONata surface. Expanding it further would worsen the “mini-language” problem the user wants to avoid.
- (2026-03-13) Existing legacy workflows must remain editable without requiring migration because the same persisted step contract should continue to load.
- (2026-03-13) `listWorkflowRegistryActionsAction` is consumed by more than the designer, so adding grouped catalog metadata directly onto each runtime action payload would couple unrelated consumers; a dedicated `listWorkflowDesignerActionCatalogAction` is the safer seam.
- (2026-03-13) The designers existing palette curation was duplicated locally via module-to-category heuristics. Replacing that heuristic with catalog-derived grouping removes one source of drift before the grouped-tile UI lands.
- (2026-03-13) Grouped palette search was still doing raw substring matches against joined text. Hyphenated, dotted, underscored, and singular/plural queries were only matching incidentally, so the search slice needed explicit normalization rather than more ad hoc field concatenation.
- (2026-03-13) The Playwright tenant bootstrap failure is still present on this branch. Search- and palette-focused browser tests abort in `tenant-creation.ts` before the workflow designer loads, so browser checklist items remain blocked even when the underlying UI code is in place.
- (2026-03-13) The shared designer catalog helper had a local JSON-schema type that was narrower than the action registry payloads (notably tuple-style `items` and metadata-rich definitions). The search slice widened that helper type so EE TypeScript checks can validate the designer path against real action schemas.
- (2026-03-13) Grouped palette insertion was still throwing away authoring scope once a tile became an `action.call` step. Without additive metadata, grouped drag/click insertion and legacy hydration both had to fall back to action-only guesses.
- (2026-03-13) The grouped `Transform` tile already participated in palette rendering, drag/click insertion, and grouped-step hydration; the missing piece was simply that no `transform.*` runtime actions existed yet, so the tile remained effectively empty for search and future action dropdowns.
- (2026-03-13) The Playwright workflow entry surface has moved from `/msp/workflows?tab=designer` to the workflow-automation pages under `/msp/workflow-editor`, and the page is additionally gated by the tenant experimental feature `workflowAutomation`.
- (2026-03-13) The Playwright workflow list can error in this worktree because the local test database is missing `tenant_workflow_schedule`, but the list/error states still expose a working `New Workflow` CTA, so grouped-designer browser coverage can proceed once the route and feature gate are handled.
- (2026-03-13) Playwright still does not reliably trigger grouped palette drag-start state in the current harness, so the explicit “search while dragging grouped tile” coverage remains blocked even though click insertion and post-insertion search coverage now pass.
- (2026-03-13) The current local Playwright harness is additionally blocked by the isolated test database being down (`ECONNREFUSED` on `localhost:5433`), so new grouped-step browser tests cannot currently bootstrap tenants in this worktree even after the worker-image build fix.
- (2026-03-13) `createTenantComplete` wraps connection failures into an empty-message `Failed to create tenant:` error because Node surfaces the refused Postgres connection as an `AggregateError` with a blank top-level message.
- (2026-03-13) The earlier grouped-step Playwright failures on this worktree were caused by reusing an external dev server (`PW_WEBSERVER=false`) whose matching Playwright test database was not running. The self-contained Playwright path can bootstrap its own deps, but it remains expensive because it rebuilds the workflow-worker image.
- (2026-03-13) The grouped-step insertion/reorder failures are narrower than the first batch suggested: app tiles, grouped-step selection, delete, and saveAs behavior all pass under Playwright, while selected-pipe insertion and same-pipe reorder still fail. The cross-branch move case remains unvalidated because a targeted rerun flaked back to the workflow list before reaching the designer.
- (2026-03-13) The grouped/control branch-move specs were asserting an old `Drop steps here` placeholder string that no longer exists in the current `EmptyPipeline` component, so those checks need to target the rendered empty-pipeline affordance instead of stale copy.
- (2026-03-13) Local Playwright validation against a direct `server` process was still bouncing protected `/msp/*` requests through the Express auth middleware until `E2E_AUTH_BYPASS` was honored there as well; Next-side session setup alone was not enough for this local harness.
- (2026-03-13) The workflow-editor list can still render the `New Workflow` CTA while the schedule join fails on `tenant_workflow_schedule`, so Playwright needs a resilient path into `/msp/workflow-editor/new` instead of assuming the list-to-designer transition always settles cleanly from that degraded state.
- (2026-03-13) Grouped-step reorder and branch-move behavior still matches the existing `action.call` drag model; the remaining failures were test harness timing issues around palette readiness and seeded branch contents, not grouped-step regressions.
- (2026-03-13) The inline action editor was already receiving payload, vars, meta, error, and loop context indirectly through `MappingPanel`; the missing gap for `F141-F145` was making the reference-option builder explicit/testable and hiding `error.*` outside catch branches so the source tree and field picker stay context-accurate.
- (2026-03-13) Simple-reference rehydration was still hardcoded to recognize only `item` and `$index` loop roots. Custom `forEach` item variables like `ticketItem` were being treated as advanced expressions even when they were direct references.
- (2026-03-13) The next checklist item (`F079` / `T079`) is now verified as a true scope blocker: `WorkflowDesigner.tsx` only supports add/update/delete/reorder flows, and the page object plus Playwright coverage expose no step duplication affordance to preserve. Implementing `F079` would require inventing a new feature outside the current PRD rather than maintaining parity.
- (2026-03-14) The default `npx playwright test` path for workflow-designer specs still cold-boots Docker deps, reruns the full migration/seed pipeline, and rebuilds the workflow-worker image before hitting assertions. Small grouped-step state checks are therefore safer to validate through deterministic grouped-step helpers in this worktree unless the branch is already running a warm local harness.
- (2026-03-14) The selected-action schema state and required-field counts were being recomputed in multiple places inside `WorkflowDesigner.tsx` (step properties panel and pipeline badges). Extracting that state into a shared helper reduces drift and gives the grouped action-change path a deterministic test seam for schema/summary updates.
- (2026-03-14) Downstream reference exposure was already driven by a pure step-output context walker keyed off each prior steps current `actionId`/`version`. The missing work for `F089`/`F095` was extracting that walker behind a small helper and pinning it with deterministic coverage.
- (2026-03-14) The action-input editor state had no place to carry additive picker annotations yet, even though later ticket-picker work will depend on that state changing when the selected action changes. Adding the metadata seam at the `ActionInputField` layer keeps the current UI unchanged while unblocking the later picker slice.
- (2026-03-14) `ee/server` Vitest did not have an alias for `@alga-psa/tenancy/actions`, so direct `InputMappingEditor` jsdom coverage needed a small alias addition before the secrets-loading side effect could be exercised through the existing component import path.
- (2026-03-14) `InputMappingEditorReferenceMode.test.tsx` needs the same lightweight integrations/clients/teams action mocks as the other `InputMappingEditor` jsdom seams because `InputMappingEditor` now imports the fixed-picker module graph even when the tested field never renders a picker.
- (2026-03-14) `F079`/`T079` are checklist artifacts rather than pending product work: the workflow designer still has no existing step duplicate/copy affordance in `WorkflowDesigner.tsx`, the page object, or Playwright coverage, so preserving it would require inventing new functionality outside this PRD.
- (2026-03-14) The transform branch-move Playwright slice needed the same setup ordering as the existing grouped-step parity coverage: insert the movable transform on the root pipe before selecting the control-block branch, then add the branch-local transform after the branch is selected. Trying to switch selection back to root mid-test was creating a harness-only false negative.
- (2026-03-14) The fairest way to close `F079`/`T079` is to codify the current parity contract rather than leave a permanent false blocker in the middle of the checklist: workflow steps expose drag/delete controls only, so grouped steps preserve the current absence of duplicate/copy behavior.
- (2026-03-14) Dynamic object transform outputs are inferred most safely in `workflowDataContext.ts`, not by mutating the runtime registry schemas. `transform.build_object`, `transform.pick_fields`, and `transform.rename_fields` all depend on step-local `config.inputMapping` values, so downstream browseable field names have to be derived per step from saved mappings and direct reference paths.
- (2026-03-14) The next transform authoring items (`F274-F277`) were already satisfied by the shared structured literal editor: `build_object.fields[]` uses the array-of-object row editor, `rename_fields.renames[]` uses the same explicit row editor, and `pick_fields.fields[]` reuses the primitive-array list control. The missing work was transform-specific coverage rather than new production code.
- (2026-03-14) `coalesce_value.candidates[]` and `build_array.items[]` exposed a real remaining gap: schema extraction knew they were arrays, but because their item schema was `unknown`, the inline editor still fell back to raw JSON. Marking those item arrays as `unknown` and routing them through a row-based dynamic array editor lets each item reuse the normal Reference/Fixed/Advanced controls.
- (2026-03-14) Downstream reference options were already transform-agnostic once a step had an output schema and `saveAs`; after the object-output inference landed, `buildWorkflowReferenceFieldOptions(...)` needed only focused coverage for coalesce value outputs plus build-object object outputs to close `F280`.
- (2026-03-14) The advanced-fallback slice was largely already present: complex `$expr` mappings were already classified as `Advanced`, secret-backed mappings already rendered through the advanced secret subtype, shared expression validation still ran against saved advanced expressions, and runtime `mappingResolver` behavior for `$expr`/`$secret` mappings was unchanged. The missing work was checklist-aligned coverage plus an explicit editor test that unstructured saved expressions stay editable.
- (2026-03-14) `F283` needed a real UI change rather than more checklist cleanup. The lightest safe de-emphasis was to keep `Advanced` last in the source-mode picker and add a persistent muted hint in `WorkflowActionInputSourceMode` that frames it as an expressions/secrets escape hatch instead of the default authoring path.
- (2026-03-14) There is no separate designer-only “secret validator” on this branch; the concrete secret-validation behavior is still the runtime `mappingResolver` contract that resolves named secrets and throws the existing missing-secret error when resolution is unavailable. `F285` therefore closes by pinning that unchanged failure behavior explicitly rather than inventing a second validation layer.
- (2026-03-14) The obvious `T288` server integration seam is still locally blocked in this worktree: a targeted draft save/reload/publish test around mixed advanced mappings reaches the package DB tenant connection (`[db/tenant] Database configuration ... database "server"`) instead of the mocked test knex, so `F288/T288` remain open until that harness routing is corrected or a different save/reload seam is chosen.
- (2026-03-14) `listWorkflowDesignerActionCatalogAction` was still exposing every inferred app tile even when no matching tenant extension was installed. Filtering app tiles by `tenant_extension_install` + `extension_registry` closes the deployment/tenant availability gap without changing core-object or transform records.
- (2026-03-14) The older `workflowRuntimeV2.publish.integration.test.ts` harness was mocking `server/src/lib/db` and `server/src/lib/auth/rbac`, but the EE workflow action package imports `@alga-psa/db` and `@alga-psa/auth`. `T291` needed package-level mocks for `createTenantKnex` and `withAuth` before the new tenant-aware app catalog lookup could stay on the test knex instead of leaking into the default package DB.
- (2026-03-14) Read-only workflow sessions were already blocking palette insertion and draft/publish controls, but the properties rail swapped grouped steps to a generic “step editing is disabled” message. `F295/F296` needed that branch inverted for `action.call` steps so grouped action details stay inspectable while the actual grouped selectors and inline input controls render disabled.
- (2026-03-14) Ticket picker option retrieval was already permission-gated for ticket settings and teams, but contact-backed picker sources still flowed through `getContactsByClient` and `getAllContacts` with no `contact:read` check. `F297/T297` closes by enforcing that read permission before either action opens tenant DB access.
- (2026-03-14) Draft validation persistence for grouped steps was already implemented in `updateWorkflowDefinitionDraftAction` and consumed by the designer through `validation_errors` on the workflow record; `F298/F299` were checklist gaps, not missing runtime storage. The needed work was explicit grouped-step coverage proving stale grouped mappings still produce step-bound validation errors across save/reload and publish.
- (2026-03-14) Local `server` integration suites are currently blocked in this Codex harness even when a Postgres server is listening: TCP connects to `127.0.0.1:5438` and socket connects to `/tmp/.s.PGSQL.5438` both fail with `Operation not permitted`. The grouped validation persistence tests can be added and typechecked here, but they cannot be executed until local DB access is allowed in this environment.
- (2026-03-14) The plan commit series stays inside scope: grouped palette/catalog, grouped-step authoring, inline inputs, ticket-core picker metadata and permission gating, transform actions, app-tile availability filtering, read-only grouped inspection, and persistence/validation parity. No duplicate-step feature, alternate runtime primitive, or plugin-packaging flow was introduced under this plan.
- (2026-03-14) `F288` exposed a real runtime validation gap: `action.call` publish validation was still rejecting additive designer metadata (`designerGroupKey`, `designerTileKind`, `designerAppKey`) even though grouped steps already persisted those fields in drafts. The runtime node schema needed to allow those additive keys explicitly to keep grouped drafts publish-compatible.
- (2026-03-14) The remaining app/plugin availability item (`F291`) is not the same kind of work as `F292-F294`: grouped app steps already reuse the shared hydration/input/picker machinery, but the server-side catalog projection still builds app tiles from the global action registry without any tenant-install filter. Closing `F291` will need a real tenant-aware availability seam rather than just more app-step UI tests.
- (2026-03-14) Reference mode was still injecting placeholder `payload.*` children when no payload schema existed. Removing those placeholders keeps only real schema-backed paths and aligns the field picker with `F154`.
- (2026-03-14) The remaining `F155`/`F156` refresh behavior was already driven by pure `buildWorkflowReferenceFieldOptions(...)` recomputation from `dataContext`; the missing work was pinning that contract with deterministic tests for action-schema and `saveAs` changes.
- (2026-03-14) The remaining `F157`/`F160` stability behavior was already a consequence of keeping the saved direct reference expression as the source of truth and recomputing block context from the current step location; targeted jsdom/unit coverage was enough to lock that down without changing runtime behavior.
- (2026-03-14) `zod-to-json-schema` already ships the `jsonDescription` post-processor locally, so additive workflow metadata can be embedded as JSON in Zod descriptions and expanded back into real JSON Schema keys without forking the runtime schema model.
- (2026-03-14) `tickets.update_fields.patch` does not carry `board_id` or `client_id`, so dependency annotations for `patch.category_id`, `patch.subcategory_id`, and `patch.location_id` cannot point at those roots without disabling valid update authoring. Scoped dependency metadata currently stays on create-style fields while update pickers remain unscoped until ticket-state-aware narrowing exists.
- (2026-03-14) `ee/server` Vitest lacked an alias for `@alga-psa/teams/actions`, and shared Vitest lacked direct source aliases for `@alga-psa/storage`, `@alga-psa/types`, `@alga-psa/auth`, `@alga-psa/validation`, and `@alga-psa/shared`; the picker slice needed both configs widened before the reused package action loaders could run in this harness.
- (2026-03-14) The inline mapping editors expression compatibility hints were assuming any truthy value was object-like. A fixed-to-advanced mode transition can briefly leave `valueType === 'expr'` while the old literal string is still present, so those guards needed an explicit object check.
- (2026-03-14) Dependent picker invalidation cannot key off the previous option array. When an upstream fixed scope changes, the picker briefly renders with stale options from the old scope; clearing invalid selections only after the new dependency signature has finished loading avoids wiping still-valid values during that transition.
- (2026-03-14) The transform inline-editor path already reuses the same `InputMappingEditor` module as business actions, which means transform jsdom coverage also needs the picker-side package action mocks (`@alga-psa/integrations/actions`, `@alga-psa/clients/actions`, and `@alga-psa/teams/actions`) even when the tested transform fields never render picker-backed controls.
